MEET THE ARTIST: LINDSEY NOBEL
For this Meet the Artist series, D2 Art is very excited to feature Lindsey Nobel and talk about her work and get the inside scoop into what moves her. Lindsey Nobel, based in Los Angeles, is fascinated by the invisible, which led her to developing a drawing language that connects us to computers. Her abstract and sometimes surrealistic paintings range from monochrome works with fine lines to vibrant and colorful paintings that show an influence of technology, science, and human connection.
1. What is your strongest memory of your childhood?
I had a pet Beluga whale that lived at Sea World that I would visit as my parents gave me the freedom to go to Sea World on my own at a young age.
2. Describe a real-life situation that inspired you to create?
Finding a bunch of old construction debris at my neighbor’s house and using it to make 3 dimensional sculptures.
3.What other artist do you admire? Why?
Joan Mitchell, because I love the abstract energy that she puts into her pieces.
4.How would you describe the current art scene in LA
Robust and very diversified
5.What do you dislike about the art world?
People tend to form cliques and it can be judgmental based on your sales, or connections and not the quality of the artwork
6.What do you like about the art world/ or art community?
It creates an international community, that is unique, intelligent and creative
7.Which creative medium would you love to pursue but haven’t yet?
I would like to pursue film-making
8.What is your dream project?
To make a large scale, interactive neuron sculpture with 7 different colors that relate to the 7 chakras.
9. To date, what is your most memorable piece or project?
I made a large scale wall of neurons in 2002 that was shown in a 2 person show with Sol LeWitt
10.What does being creative mean to you?
Being creative is the act of entering a meditative space and working with your own energy. Working with color and line and transferring that energy onto another surface or material
11.What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Comparison is the key to despair.
12.What are you trying to communicate with your art?
Connection and Community amongst humans and how technology is seen as an energy.
13.Where do you go to get inspired?
I go to the ocean or I go to a botanical garden. Scuba diving has a profound influence on my art, as the underwater environment gives me endless subject matter. I find the stillness of it calming.
14.What superpower would you have and why?
I would like to be able to swim underwater like a dolphin or a whale and enjoy the peace and serenity of the ocean.
